How to Read a Berberine Supplement Label
Key takeaways - Start with serving size, then find the berberine line. - On a complex, the big "mg" number is the total of all ingredients. In ours, 500mg of the 1300mg is Berberine HCL. - Check the extract ratio and the form (HCL), and look for amounts shown line by line. - Ask your healthcare provider first if you take any medication or have a medical condition.
The big number on a berberine bottle is often not the amount of berberine. This guide shows where to look on the label, what the terms mean, and who should check with a doctor first. We use our own Berberine Complex as the worked example.
Step 1: Find the serving size
Open the Supplement Facts panel. The first line is "Serving Size." Every amount below it is "per serving."
For Humming Herbs Berberine Complex, a serving is 2 capsules. The bottle has 180 vegetarian capsules, so it holds 90 servings. That is why it is described as a 90-day supply at 2 capsules a day.
Step 2: Find the berberine line
Look for the word "berberine," then check the form and the amount.
- Form: Ours reads Berberine HCL. HCL means hydrochloride, a purified form common in capsules. A label that says only "barberry extract" is less specific.
- Amount: 500mg per serving, as a 20:1 extract sourced from Berberis aristata.
Step 3: Understand the big number on the front
The front says 1300mg. On this product, that is the total for all eight ingredients in one serving:
| Ingredient | Per serving |
|---|---|
| Berberine HCL | 500mg |
| Milk thistle extract | 200mg |
| Ceylon cinnamon bark extract | 150mg |
| Gymnema sylvestre leaf powder | 150mg |
| Turmeric root extract (95% curcuminoids) | 100mg |
| Wild bitter melon extract | 100mg |
| Red yeast rice extract | 50mg |
| Probiotic blend | 50mg |
| Total | 1300mg |
Berberine HCL is about 38 percent of the total. Two bottles that both say "1300mg" can contain very different amounts of berberine, so compare the berberine line, not the headline.
Step 4: Decode the extract ratio
"20:1" means about 20 parts of raw plant were used to make 1 part of extract. Higher means more concentrated. Our milk thistle is 10:1, so 200mg of extract equals 2000mg of powder. Ratios help you compare, but only when they are printed on the label.
Step 5: Watch for proprietary blends
A proprietary blend gives one combined weight and no amount per ingredient. If you cannot see each amount, you cannot compare products. Our panel lists each amount.
Step 6: Check "Other ingredients"
Ours lists microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable magnesium stearate, natural beta-carotene and L-ascorbic acid, in a vegetable cellulose capsule. It is free from sugar, gluten and GMOs. Read this line every time if you have allergies.
Dosage on the label
Follow the label: 2 capsules daily, with meals and adequate water. Do not take more than directed. Dose ranges you find online are for other products and do not apply to every capsule. If you want to take a different amount, ask your healthcare provider first.
Tips for taking it
- Take it with a meal and a full glass of water.
- Pick a regular time so it is easy to remember.
- Do not combine several berberine products without adding up the labels.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, out of reach of children.
- Do not use if the safety seal is damaged or missing.
Who should talk to their doctor first
Berberine is not right for everyone. Talk to your healthcare provider before use if you:
- are pregnant or nursing
- take any prescription or over-the-counter medicine
- have a medical condition, including a liver or kidney condition
- have an upcoming surgery or procedure
- are thinking of giving it to a child (this product is for adults)
Berberine and some herbs in this formula, including red yeast rice, can interact with medicines. Ask your pharmacist to check your full list. Supplements are not a substitute for medical care and never replace a prescribed medicine.
Talk to your healthcare provider
Talk to your healthcare provider, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, take medication or have a medical condition. Stop use and call your provider if you notice side effects such as stomach upset or any unusual symptom.
