What is butyrate?
Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid produced in the colon when gut bacteria ferment dietary fibre. It is the preferred fuel of the cells lining the colon. In supplements it is usually supplied as a mineral salt — calcium butyrate or magnesium butyrate — which is more stable and easier to put in a capsule than the free acid.
Why two mineral forms?
Pairing calcium butyrate with magnesium butyrate splits the mineral load across two minerals instead of loading all of it onto calcium, and both minerals are counted on the panel: 131 mg calcium (10% DV) and 37 mg magnesium (9% DV) per serving.
