Humming Herbs® Modified Citrus Pectin is a capsule supplement providing low molecular weight modified citrus pectin 1,500 mg per two-capsule serving, with vitamin C 75 mg and selenium 50 mcg as L-selenomethionine, in a bottle of 120 capsules — 60 servings. It is for adults who want MCP in capsule form at a stated 1,500 mg serving rather than a powder they have to measure.

What is modified citrus pectin?

Pectin is a soluble fibre found in the peel and pulp of citrus fruit. Modified citrus pectin, usually shortened to MCP, has been processed to reduce its molecular weight, which is what the "low molecular weight" on our panel refers to. It is used as a dietary ingredient in cellular health formulas.

Why the vitamin C and selenium?

Vitamin C as ascorbic acid, 75 mg (83% DV), and selenium as L-selenomethionine, 50 mcg (91% DV), are both nutrients that contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. L-selenomethionine is the organic selenium form.

How much should I take?

Two capsules daily with water. This is one of the few products in our range taken with water rather than food. The bottle holds 60 servings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about this product

What is modified citrus pectin?

Pectin is a soluble fibre found in the peel and pulp of citrus fruit. Modified citrus pectin is pectin that has been processed so its molecular chains are shorter than those in ordinary dietary pectin. This panel declares low molecular weight modified citrus pectin 1,500 mg per two-capsule serving, alongside vitamin C and selenium.

What does "low molecular weight" mean on the label?

It means the pectin has been broken down into shorter chains than ordinary food pectin, which is the form specified on this panel and the form shoppers comparing modified citrus pectin products usually look for. The panel states it directly as part of the ingredient name rather than leaving you to infer it from the brand's marketing copy.

How much modified citrus pectin is in a serving?

1,500 mg of low molecular weight modified citrus pectin per two-capsule serving, which works out at 750 mg in each capsule. The 120-capsule bottle holds 60 servings, so it is a 60-day supply at the labelled serving. The panel also declares vitamin C 75 mg and selenium 50 mcg as their own rows.

Is this a fibre supplement?

Pectin is a soluble fibre, but this is not formulated as a bulk fibre product. It is a modified citrus pectin supplement at a fixed 1,500 mg serving, which is a fraction of the amounts people take for bulk fibre purposes. If a bulk fibre product is what you are after, this is not the right bottle.

Should I take it with water or with food?

With water. The labelled direction is two capsules daily with water, or as directed by a healthcare professional. That is different from most formulas in this range, which specify food, so it is worth noting. Store the bottle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and keep it out of reach of children.

How much selenium does it contain, and what should I check it against?

Selenium 50 mcg as L-selenomethionine, which is 91% of the Daily Value, plus vitamin C 75 mg at 83%. Check the selenium in particular against any multivitamin you already take, because 91% leaves little headroom. Consult your healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, under 18, taking medication or have a medical condition.
